Scrap Pink Weekend Crop: A Success!

Our Scrap Pink Crop was an overwhelming success! And we want to thank all of you, customers and donors alike, for making it so.

After the two day event we made

$605.00

in donation money for the Susan G. Komen and Scrap Pink fundraising campaign. Now this might not seem like a lot, but when you add this to the money raised by all the other participating independent scrapbook stores around the country, it quickly adds up! We will be sure to send an email letting you know the total amount of money raised by all stores.

We would especially like to thank the following businesses and individuals for their generous contributions to this event:

Atria's Restaurant and Tavern for donating pasta, bread and chopped salad for dinner on both nights
Ollie's Pizza for donating pizza for lunch on both days
Falcone Health and Massage Center for donating wonderful ten minute massages by one of their talented massage therapists

Scrapbooker’s Dream joins nationwide Scrap Pink campaign to
benefit breast cancer research

McMurray, PA, September 1, 2009 - On Sept. 26 and 27, 2009, local scrapbooking enthusiasts will come together for the third annual Scrap Pink weekend, a fundraising event created by Scrapbooks etc.® to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. Scrap Pink has already donated over $200,000 to breast cancer research. Hosting a crop locally will be Scrapbooker's Dream, a scrapbooking shop located in McMurray, PA at 4067 Washington Road.

On Scrap Pink weekend, retailers will invite consumers to participate in an exciting in-store
crop, where scrapbookers will come together to make a difference. Consumers will pay to attend the crop, and $10 of this fee will be donated to support Komen's mission to find a cure for breast cancer through research, education, screening, and treatment. Sherri Clancy, owner of Scrapbooker's Dream, sees Scrap Pink as much more than just another fundraiser. "It is a chance to help make a huge difference to this cause." she says.

To ensure adequate space and supplies for participants, Clancy recommends that Scrapbookers call in advance of Scrap Pink weekend, although walk-ins are welcome, too.

New Art Classes

One of our favorite things about owning Scrapbooker's Dream is that we get to share with all of you our love of the scrapbooking craft, whether you come to the store seeking advice or when you sign up for our classes that are taught by some of the most talented scrapbookers around.

We believe that scrapbooking is not just a craft, but also a form of art in that each of your scrapbooks is a wholly unique expression of yourself and the precious memories you preserve of your family and friends. And we all create these books of memories so that our children and our children's children can come to know and understand their own family heritage and their place in the world.

We believe that learning and using new techniques and materials will help you to better express the memories you cherish, keeping your scrapbooks alive and fresh as the years go by. And to that end, all of us at Scrapbooker's Dream are proud to announce our association with Becky Mayhew, noted artist, teacher and founder of The Art Shoppe, who will offer at our store art classes that encompass the foundations of drawing and the excitement of calligraphy and lettering.

In this post we introduce you to Becky Mayhew and the new art classes that will begin this September.

Becky Mayhew

Artist and Teacher

Becky Mayhew attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh where she graduated with honors in 1980. She worked as both a full-time and freelance artist doing graphic design, caricatures, cartooning, drafting & illustration. Over the past 25 years her teaching experience has included a wide range of subjects including: general art curriculum, yearbook, drafting, graphic design, and drama. She has also taught caricature workshops at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and has been a guest lecturer at Duquesne University, and several local art leagues. In addition to her classes at The Art Shoppe, she currently teaches at Lakeview Christian Academy in Bridgeville, PA.

Class Offerings

Drawing Foundations - Learn the basics of "how to draw what you see" in pencil using traditional methods of recognizing basic shapes, proportion, shadows and shading, etc.

Calligraphy and Lettering - Learn the "art of beautiful writing" in the Chancery Cursive style using a calligraphy pen with a cartridge. Basic upper & lower case alphabet, word formation, spacing, etc. covered. Students will complete a simple saying by the final class.

Each of these classes is taught once a week (Thursdays) and each
spans eight sessions. Both courses will begin on Thursday, September 10, 2009 and finish on Thursday, October 29, 2009.

Becky's classes are normally $25.00 per hour and a half session, but she is going to give all Scrapbooker's Dream customers a special discount of $20.00 per session, so the full cost for each course is $160.00, which does not including the supplies: note that you can make two payments of $80.00 each; once at the beginning and once half-way through.

Drawing Foundations will start at 10:00AM and end at 11:30AM, and will require $16.95 for your a drawing kit.

Calligraphy and Lettering will start at 1:00PM and end at 2:30PM. We will be sending out a separate email with the detailed supply lists.

You can call or stop in to sign up for classes. In order to guarantee your spot, the first payment is required before the first class begins.

Summer Day Crop or Weekend Crop: Your Choice

Because of the popularity of our winter Cabin Fever crop this year and a lot of great feedback and suggestions from you, we wanted to know how many of you would be interested in changing the August day crop to a fun-filled, in-from-the-hot-sun weekend just for you. Think of it as your very own mini-vacation! If you think that this is something you'd like to do, email us at Scrapbooker's Dream and let us know your thoughts. We will still host the day crop if we can't generate enough interest. We are trying to see if we can get a minimum of 50 people interested.

Now for the fun part. We need your help in naming this summer event! So if you have an idea for a cool name, send it our way and if we use yours you'll receive an extra special free gift at the crop!

National Scrapbooking Day Event

On Saturday, May 2, we are celebrating National Scrapbooker's Day with an all-day, 11:00 am to 11:00 pm, crop at the store. We will have a door prize, several make and takes, a pizza dinner, and lots of fun and and scrapbooking.

The fee is just $25.00 for the day and because we're holding it at the store, seating is limited, so call today to register your spot. You won't be disappointed!

A Big Spring Fever Day Crop Thank You

Hi everyone. Sherri and I want to thank you so much for joining us at the Spring Fever Day Crop. We hope you liked it and we hope you liked the meals. If you have any comments or suggestions send them to us via the blog or an email or a phone call. Whichever you like.

Now, I know that I should have taken photos (sorry Sherri!), but I was so caught up in the moment as I created titles on the Pazzles (I am still trying to learn how to use the thing) and worked on one of my new favorite crafts, Quilling.

Of course Sherri and I could not have done any of this without the tireless help of our associates and friends. We want to thank Kelly Garritan--one of our very talented expert scrapbookers--who worked at the store during the crop. We all missed you seeing you in the evening, Kelly, and hope that you are feeling better. We also want to thank Lauren Brocchi, our other very telented scrapbooking expert, who worked with us during the crop and filled in when Sherri had to leave for a bit. And finally we would like to thank Jan Freeman, a true artist, who did an awesome job demonstrating how to make such beautiful, seemingly complicated things, very easy using just a few, simple techniques. After watching Jan I think that even I, with no scrapbooking experience at all, could make some of the things she showed us.

Again, thank you so much for making our crop a resounding success!

Our New Blog

We have finally set up our blog! I'm not sure if the current template will be permanent, but I'll leave it up for a while--it's difficult to find decent template layouts themes for crafts and scrapbookers, and I don't have the skill yet to create one myself.

Anyway... Rather than keep a pseudo blog on our website's front page, we'll be keeping all news here. The site will still have a section on the front page for the latest news.

So the Spring Fever Day Crop is in just a few days and here at the store we're pulling it all together to make this crop one of the best. We will post more information, pictures and news related to the crop.

The Washington Area Humane Society is holding a FREE Electronics Collection Recycling Fundraiser that will be held Thursday through Sunday, March 19 - 22, at 10am-6pm. They will be collecting donatation at the following four locations

1. Washington Crowne Center
2. Tractor Supply on Route 19S
3. Southpointe Ice-o-plex
4. 84 Auction across from the shelter

First Yard Sale an Overwhelimg Success

We were hoping that our first yard sale of the year would be successful, and indeed it was! Here are some pictures of the yard sale tables before we opened.

Today's turnout was tremendous and we would like to thank all who participated and all who came to get some great deals! We also want to thank those who decided to donate their remaining items to a daycare center for the elderly. Way to go!

We will have our second one in September so if you missed out today you'll have another chance!
